What is an Indoor Air Quality Assessment?

Simply expressed, ‘air quality’ is the term we use to indicate the level of air pollution present in a particular area – especially inside our buildings where we spend up to 92% of our time.

People are at risk from breathing polluted air, because the most harmful pollutants to a human are mostly invisible to the human eye.

This is having an adverse effect on our health, our wellbeing, our businesses performance and is destroying the fabric of our buildings.

What Needs to Change?

  • Under the HSA Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality (May 23), there is now a requirement for an Internal Air Quality Assessment to be carried out within all types of premises.

  • Air Quality rules and regulations have long been in place, including the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Occupiers Liability Act 1984, where an employer has a duty of care to ensure that a safe and healthy environment is provided for its employees and visitors.

Ultra-Protect are experts within the Air Quality and Assessment sector with 35-years plus experience, so fully conversant with the principles of an Air Quality Assessment.

We understand the pollutant types, where they are produced or released within our buildings, how they are affecting our daily activities and how they can be controlled.

We also understand air movement, and the fact that every building and situation is different, and reacts differently to passive airflow as well as free standing and fixed mechanical systems, with the correct air change per hour vital.

This is without mentioning reports on emission levels, odour sources and the immediate external air quality.

What Are The Air Quality Legal Requirements?

Employers have a duty of care to maintain a safe and healthy work environment, stressed within the existing Health & Safety at Work Act of 1974, as well as the Occupiers Liability Act of 1984. The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations' Approved Code of Practice specifies that the quality of the air inside your facility should be at least as good as, if not better than, the air outside.

Sadly, this is rarely the case because indoor air quality, particularly in our crowded cities and business and industrial buildings, is typically between 5 and 50 times worse than outside air quality.

With the latest HSA Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality, (May 2023) update, we’re well-equipped to help you comply with such legislation.
